Once again, The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher finds herself embroiled in a new mystery! Upon awakening unusually early one morning, Phryne Fisher is presented with a rare opportunity to fill her free time. After dropping her daughters off at the Blind Institute for their school-sponsored charity work, she pays a visit to a university professor she had met and admired during a previous case. During lunch, the smitten professor invites Phryne to join him for dinner at his home in Williamstown later that week.
At the dinner with her new friend Jeoffrey, Phryne makes two disturbing discoveries: first, a discarded opium pipe in the park, and later the body of a Chinese man on the beach, whose cause of death was not apparent, but was ultimately ruled a homicide. Shortly after, the teenage sister-in-law of Phryne's longtime lover Lin Chung disappears from her home. Then, one of Jeoffrey's colleagues is murdered at a Chinese-themed party he hosts, in front of a houseful of guests. Phryne can't help but wonder if all of these incidents are somehow related. Additionally, she receives notes in her letterbox warning her to "REPENT" and that "THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH".
In this clever mystery, Phryne enlists the help of her three wards to solve their own mysteries: Ruth and Jane are tracking an embezzler at the Institute, while Tinker assists Phryne in uncovering the author of the threatening messages. Alongside the formidable and fashionable Phryne, this mystery features her three wards who are all working to solve their own puzzles.
